Well that escalated quickly. Georgia and the Czech Republic have only played one game at Euro 2024, and they played pretty darn well too, but they are already at the precipice of a great crossroads. Defeat for either team today would leave them needing snookers reach the last 16.

Georgia were involved the most enjoyable game of the tournament to date, a pulsating 3-1 defeat to Turkey, while the Czech Republic gave Portugal enough of a scare that Cristiano Ronaldo felt compelled to dance on their grave when Francisco Conceicao scored an injury-time winner. Let’s hope for more excitement today.

34 min Kakabadze’s shot from 20 yards was blocked by Jurasek.

31 min The shots were Georgia 0 – Czech Republic 13. It didn’t feel so one-sided. Georgia played pretty well, but they clearly weren’t serious.

29 min Hrožek shot straight at Mamadashvili from the edge of the area and the Czech Republic should have taken the lead.

27 min Kvaratskeria makes a neat one-two pass, dances to the edge of the area and is brilliantly tackled by Franac.

Czerny plays on the other side. two They took a one-two but mis-kicked it six yards from goal. The flag was up but it looked very tight so in practice it may well register as a big miss, even if not in the statistics.

26 min “It’s a bit disappointing that the 2pm/3pm match is the last of the tournament,” says Beng Cheah. “In Southeast Asia, a 9pm broadcast time for this match would be reasonable. Later matches are broadcast at 12 midnight or 3am. Nobody has time for that.”

Do you really think the UK can’t seduce you?

No goals! Georgia 0-0 Czech Republic

It took a few replays to be certain, but in the end it was clearly a hand, even if an inadvertent one.

A long throw from the right wing caused problems againThe ball bounced off a defender towards Hrodzieček, whose close-range shot was brilliantly blocked by Mamardashvili, the ball ricocheted into Hrodzieček’s face, then off his left arm and into the goal, which should have been annulled.

Goals! Georgia 0-1 Czech Republic (Hrožek 23)

This may be a case for VAR.

share

22 min After a ferocious start, the game has slowed down a bit. The Czech Republic seem to dominate the ball, but Georgia are very dangerous on the counter attack.

share

20 min The Czech Republic are moving the ball very cleanly from left to right of the field, but Jurašek’s crosses aren’t the best.

19 min “US readers can watch all the Euro games by subscribing to Vix, which covers every Euro and Copa America match for a very reasonable fee,” Martin Widdix wrote. “The only drawback is that it’s in Spanish… but that may be an advantage given the traditional perspective of the Fox Sports commentators. As for the matches, Georgia was great to watch, and I hope the Czech Republic does well today.”

They are definitely going for it, they could easily take a 2-0 lead.

18 min “Hello dear Rob,” Stephen Bradfield wrote. “It may be worth reminding readers that Georgia has produced some great players in the past. Who can forget the great Dinamo Tbilisi team of the early 1980s, Kipiani, Tsivadze etc?”

They were a little ahead of my time but look very thrilling and I plan to watch the full 4-1 win at Upton Park sometime soon. Uploaded to YouTubeI think the first time I became aware of Georgia as a footballing power was when they beat Wales 5-0 in 1994 and then when that little genius came to Manchester afterwards.

18 min Coufal received a harsh warning for a foul on Kvaratskeria – it’s unclear if it was even a foul.

Also, where did the last five minutes go?

share

13 mins Provod’s deflected long-range shot was comfortably saved by Mamardashvili. This, like Georgia’s opening game, is a fantastic advertisement for the 24-team Euros.

share

11 mins Replays show that this was a really tough call for the referee and for VAR too: Krejic nearly collided with Davitashvili but was so clumsy that the official wasn’t sure it was a foul.

My instinct is it was still a foul, but I can understand why it wasn’t given.

10 minutes “Once again I have to write the standard ‘Fox go easy on you’ email,” Joe Pearson wrote, although he didn’t really mean ‘go easy on you.’ “Once again the 9am game got ignored. I hate Fox, but I love you! Keep it up!”

Any port in a storm.

national anthem

The Georgia players, some with their eyes closed, sang the national anthem as if it were their final honor — a chilling sight for anyone who has never experienced the joy of patriotism firsthand.

Georgia’s two forwards, Both Georgi Mikhautadze and Kvica Kvaratskeria sustained injuries to their legs during the warm-up and while there are no indications yet that they will miss the match, it is hardly ideal preparation.

And this is an equally amazing piece About Jendrij Stanek, the Czech Republic goalkeeper who was previously with Everton and Hyde United.

Here’s a really great article I wrote about David Webb earlier this year. Georgia’s assistant manager.

Webb tried to foster team spirit by having his players tell each other their personal stories. He talks about playing attacking football with “calculated risks and passion, desire and intensity.” He talks about courage and about actress Beth Harmon imagining how chess pieces fit together in the Netflix series. The Queen’s Gambit.

[Florian] Wirtz has a great first touch, good change of pace and excellent positional awareness on the pitch, as seen in his goal against Scotland.

[Jamal] Musiala rarely loses the ball and can beat opponents right from the start. When opposing teams park the bus and line up their players in front of goal, he finds a solution. He was named man of the match in the first leg and scored in back-to-back games against Hungary.
