German Chancellor Criticizes EU for Wasted Potential
During a speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Thursday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed concerns that Germany and the European Union are “wasting incredible potential.” Merz, representing the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), pointed out that the EU’s limitations on freedoms and responsibilities are hindering growth.
“Both Germany and Europe have squandered incredible growth potential in recent years by dragging their feet on reforms and unnecessarily and excessively restricting entrepreneurial freedom and personal responsibility,” Merz stated at the WEF in Davos, Switzerland. “We’re going to change that now.”
He emphasized the need to “significantly reduce bureaucracy in Europe,” adding that the single market was originally established to cultivate the world’s most competitive economy. “Instead, we have become the world champions of overregulation. It must end,” he insisted.
Merz also noted that “safety and predictability are prioritized over over-regulation and misplaced perfection.” He claimed that Europe is “not at the mercy” of what he calls a “new world order.”
“The old world order is disintegrating at a breathtaking pace. We have entered a dangerous era where only power matters,” he remarked, urging Europeans not to accept this new reality as their fate.
Furthermore, earlier, Merz had acknowledged that shutting down Germany’s nuclear power plants was a “serious strategic mistake.” He had also mentioned plans to initiate discussions about the repatriation of Syrians in Germany, which marks a shift in his previous stance of avoiding cooperation with right-wing parties advocating such policies.
