Germany’s Angela Merkel Laments Trump’s Win Left Her Feeling ‘Sad’

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has lamented that she felt “sad” after President-elect Donald Trump's landslide victory in the 2024 election.

In an interview with a German news magazine der spiegel Published on Friday – and first reported Ahead of the publication of her memoir, Reuters reported – Chancellor Merkel said her victory struck a chord with her.

“If someone in the political world does not tolerate win-win situations and only recognizes winners and losers, that is a very difficult challenge for multilateralism,” she said, explaining. Spiegel Continuing her series of criticisms dating back to 2016, when Trump first took office, she said how his victory filled her with sadness.

Merkel said the job of politics is ultimately to balance the interests of ordinary people and those in power, calling Trump's closeness to tech billionaires like Elon Musk a “huge concern”. He said that's why he called it that.

“If this ultimate lever is too heavily influenced by corporations, whether it's capital or technology, it will be an unprecedented challenge for all of us,” she said.

She cited the example of Tesla and SpaceX chief executive Musk, suggesting the president-elect will challenge the very limits of government, with joint responsibility for the new Department of Government Efficiency, Reuters reports. He was reportedly selected by President Trump.

“If there was someone like him, [Musk] “If we own 60% of all the satellites in space, that must be a big concern for us, in addition to political issues,” said the 70-year-old man.

Chancellor Merkel's memoir Freedom: Memories 1954-2021 The book, written before Trump's reelection, is scheduled to be published in more than 30 countries on November 26th.

The book will be released in the US in December at an event with former President Barack Obama.
