Gerrit Cole takes charge in bold, victorious performance for the Yankees

Gerrit Cole’s Strong Return

The Yankees have been navigating through a rough patch, particularly evident with key players like Aaron Judge and Carlos Rodon sidelined. After making a comeback from Tommy John surgery, Gerrit Cole was focused more on the team’s rebuilding efforts instead of his own performance metrics against Minnesota.

“The screws are back,” he stated, reflecting on the significance of his five innings, during which he allowed two runs, especially amidst a rain delay that lasted nearly an hour. “We needed this win today. Sometimes you have to do difficult things in this league. It’s not fun to sit there for over an hour, pitch the bullpen, but that’s what we needed,” he continued, thankful that they pulled through with the important win.

In their 5-2 victory against the Twins, Cole returned for his eighth start since his surgery roughly a year and a half ago.

The game experienced a pause right after Cole struck out Brooks Lee to close the third inning, as a storm rolled in. Despite the interruption lasting 53 minutes, he managed to stay focused and pitched two more innings afterward.

During the delay, he practiced throwing four simulated innings, each consisting of 8 to 15 pitches every 10 minutes, as he and manager Aaron Boone made the decision to keep him in the game.

After allowing one run and two hits in the fourth, Boone had considered pulling him since the Yankees were leading by just one and Cole had already thrown 78 pitches. However, Cole insisted on staying in the game, and Boone later noted that Cole was feeling good, which was a positive sign.

In the fourth inning, Cole conceded a one-out double but managed to prevent further scoring from the ensuing batters. Boone expressed his enthusiasm for seeing Cole perform strongly, emphasizing how important it was when Cole fought to stay on the mound.

While his performance wasn’t overpowering, having seven strikeouts and no walks showcased an improvement, especially after facing mixed results in earlier games. This season has been on the challenging side for him, as he worked to find his rhythm post-surgery.

On Friday night, he leaned back into his four-seam fastball, which appeared to yield better results than during his previous outing against Boston. Even though he allowed four extra-base hits through five innings, each out proved essential, particularly with rookie Brendan Beck taking the mound in place of Rodon on Saturday.
