Robots and Baseball Drama
Robots are definitely providing some entertainment already. Just look at the excitement from Saturday’s game where the Boston Red Sox faced off against the Cincinnati Reds. The game, held at Great American Ball Park, ended with a score of 6-5, and it went into extra innings. Sounds thrilling, right? Well, the real spectacle turned out to be the referee, CB Buckner.
During this game, Boston’s manager, Alex Cora, was thrown out by Buckner over a disputed check-swing call against Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story. What added fuel to the fire was Buckner’s decision not to consult with the first base umpire, especially after some of his calls had already been overturned by the automatic ball strike challenge system.
Fast forward to Sunday, and the drama continued, this time involving the ABS system again. Minnesota Twins manager Derek Shelton marked a milestone by becoming the first manager ejected for protesting a robot’s ruling after his team lost to the Baltimore Orioles.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Twins were looking to rally. With one out and a runner on first, Josh Bell stepped up to bat against relief pitcher Ryan Helsley. A pitch that seemed to be out of the strike zone resulted in a walk for Bell, which would have left the Twins with two on base. However, as Bell made his way to first, Helsley pointed to his head and called for a challenge. Ultimately, the pitch was overturned, and the ABS system declared it as strike three.
Shelton, storming out of the dugout, was incredibly angry, arguing that Helsley hadn’t challenged quickly enough. His outburst led to his ejection from the game.
All in all, it seems like this season is going to be quite entertaining.
