Long before I was the governor of Arkansas or the White House press secretary, I came to Washington as a bright-eyed college graduate for my first real job at the Department of Education. I realized I was spending more time changing coffee filters as I thought I was there to change the world.
However, I left for one crystal clear lesson. Now is the time to abolish the Federal Department of Education.
I'm a mom of three so I know that even in the same family, there are no two children to learn the same way. It is then ridiculous to assume that every child in every American community has the same educational needs and goals. But that's exactly how the Ministry of Education works.
The Education Secretary says the department has taken the first step to eliminate “bureaucratic bloat.”
Quarterly agencies are mostly pass-through and deal with money on their way from Congress to school. The problem is that departments are forced to create thousands of nasty regulations around all of their spending. Our state's education programs are managed by unknown federal officials, not skilled teachers in our own community.

Eliminating the department allows federal dollars to flow freely into our community.
President Donald Trump clearly believes that in his efforts to spend and emit swamps, he has zeroed the Department of Education as a prime example of federal overreach and waste. Republicans have been committed to abolishing it since President Ronald Reagan, but Trump is ultimately obliged to accomplish it.
Parents have also awakened to inefficiency and lack of accountability at our school. The country's report cards show that mathematics, science and reading scores are better than they were 20 years ago. Something has to be changed.
The answer is to give back to the state and the community. One of my first actions as governor was to pass the learning method. This is a drastic overhaul of the Arkansas education system, from $36,000 a year to $50,000 a year. It has deployed 120 literacy coaches across the state from 48th in the nation, offering a universal school choice for all students in the state.
What works in California may not work in Arkansas, while what works in one family may not work in another family. That's why we focus on choices. Instead of bureaucrats or zip cords, families should decide where their children go to school.
We are also inculcated by schools, just as Trump is eradicating Day and anti-American minds from our federal agencies. When our children are facing an educational crisis, we should focus on reading, writing and mathematics – not crazy nonsense.

When I first took office, I heard about a boy named Jack who struggled with learning disabilities and didn't fit the all-purpose model Arkansas had. His parents wanted the local school district to give Jack the resources he needed, but opposition came.
He was bullied. He was academically behind. He ran out of school once, twice and third time. One of Jack's bullies told him to die in the ditch, that's where he was found: alone, wet, sobs into the ditch.
Eliminating the department allows federal dollars to flow freely into our community.
Due to the account of education freedom, his parents were able to place him in a professional school. He is thriving now. The choice not only gave Jack a path to a bigger future, but he also felt safe.

If it works correctly, education can put even our most struggling children on the path to success. However, a top-down all-purpose system will not meet the needs of every child.
It's time to abolish the Ministry of Education, return power to the state, and ensure that all parents and students are needed and can receive the education they deserve.
