Ghislaine Maxwell, a convicted sex trafficker, claims she’s feeling “happier” in her new surroundings at a minimum-security prison in Texas. She mentioned that the facilities are clean, and notably, there are no “possums falling from the ceiling” in the kitchen.
At 63, Maxwell has expressed her approval of the cleanliness at the federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas, and the absence of pests in the kitchen, according to emails obtained and shared with the House Judiciary Committee, as reported by NBC News.
After spending four years of her 20-year sentence at a correctional facility in Tallahassee, Florida, she was transferred to the Cotton Facility on August 1.
In her emails, Maxwell noted, “The kitchen looks clean and there are no possums falling from the ceiling,” while also referencing her unpleasant experiences in Tallahassee’s kitchen, where some disturbing incidents occurred.
She further mentioned, “The facility is being operated in an orderly manner and is a safe and comfortable environment for all involved, inmates and guards alike,” as reported by the network.
Maxwell described her surroundings as feeling like “Alice’s Wonderland,” mentioning it looks “like glass.” She added, “I’m very happy here, and above all I’m safe,” with a sigh, which perhaps indicates a little irony in her situation.
Noting a lack of drug deals and violence, she suggested these issues were prevalent during her time in Tallahassee. She also commended the prison warden, Tanisha Hall, expressing that she is a “true professional” and the best representation of the prison she has encountered.
Correspondence from Maxwell indicates she has direct access to the prison’s director to facilitate her meetings and communication with attorneys. In one email to her lawyer, she mentioned speaking with the director about an issue regarding missing documents, saying, “It is now on day 7.” She appreciated the solution that involved scanning documents back and forth, calling it a time-saver.
The House Judiciary Committee, led by Rep. Jamie Raskin, uncovered emails from fellow inmates suggesting Maxwell received “VIP treatment.” Reports indicate she has meals delivered to her dorm and can train and shower late at night when the other inmates are asleep.
Furthermore, one unidentified inmate claimed that others are not allowed to prepare her meals.
David Marcus, Maxwell’s attorney, criticized the publication of her emails. He stated, “There is nothing journalistic about publishing a prisoner’s emails, including emails with his attorney,” and labeled it as tabloid-like behavior. He urged for people to move on from her situation, asserting that it’s preferable for her to be in a more secure environment.
Maxwell’s transfer came shortly after meeting with Trump’s former deputy attorney general, Todd Blanche, for an extended discussion regarding her past with Jeffrey Epstein.
Recently, the Supreme Court declined Maxwell’s appeal regarding her conviction, while Epstein’s alleged victim, Virginia Giuffre, claimed in her memoir that Maxwell had bragged about a brief encounter with actor George Clooney.
The Bureau of Prisons did not comment on the situation.
