Gov. Greg Gianforte (R) has won a second term as Montana Governor, Decision Desk Headquarters Project.
Gianforte, a former congressman, won his first term in the governor's mansion in 2020, becoming the first Republican to serve in the governor's mansion in Big Sky Country in 20 years.
His victory this cycle was largely expected. Montana has become increasingly red over the past decade. Former President Trump won the state by 16 points in 2020.
The state has seen a tight race between Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and former Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy, with Republicans leading in most polls over the past few weeks.
Gianforte has been the subject of controversy in the past. In 2017, he made headlines when he attacked a reporter and knocked him to the ground on the eve of Gianforte's victory in a 2017 special House election. Gianforte pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of assault and received a 180-day suspended sentence as part of his punishment.
