Historic Performance at Evian Championship

Sometimes, things just click. For 25-year-old Hyeran Ryu, Saturday was undoubtedly one of those days. At the Evian Championship, she pulled off an impressive 11-under-par 60, marking the lowest score ever recorded in LPGA major history. With this performance, she now holds a substantial three-stroke lead.

This remarkable round comes shortly after Ryu celebrated her first major victory at the Women’s PGA Championship a mere two weeks ago. On the 18th hole, she came close to making an eagle putt from 30 feet, but settled for a birdie instead.

After her round, Ryu reflected on her performance, stating she was unaware of her outstanding score until she evaluated her scorecard. “After the putt, I counted the score with my caddy,” she shared, visibly shocked. “Oh my god, I’m 11 under today. It was really great. My caddy says, ‘Yeah.’ I’m very happy now.”

If she had made that eagle on the final hole, she would have become only the second golfer in LPGA history to complete a round of 59.

Her 60 eclipsed the previous LPGA major record of 61, held by players like Leona Maguire and Joon-Eun Lee 6, who accomplished this feat at the Evian Championship in 2021. Kim Hyo Joo also achieved a 61 in 2014. It’s fascinating to note that the lowest round for men’s majors stands at 62, shared among a few players, including Branden Grace and Xander Schauffele.

Ryu expressed hope that her remarkable third round could be the springboard needed for her to secure a second major title in just three weeks. “Wow, what a dream,” she commented. “I just want that to happen, but I have one more day.”
