Giants bypass Tommy DeVito’s clean health for a Drew Lock start

The Giants continue to play musical chairs on the quarterback depth chart.

And Brian Daboll's explanation doesn't explain exactly why.

Drew Lock is scheduled to start Sunday against the Saints after starting in the 27-20 loss to the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. Tommy DeVito will serve as Lock's backup after missing the game against the Cowboys with a forearm injury.

Lock got the chance to start in that game because DeVito, who started last week against the Buccaneers, was unavailable. After Daniel Jones was benched after the Giants' bye week, DeVito, the No. 3 starter, was promoted to starter while Lock was a reserve.

So if DeVito, who was a full participant in Thursday's practice, is healthy enough to play, and that's what his active schedule and reserves suggest, why doesn't he return as the starter?

“[Lock] We did some good things in Dallas,” Daboll said before practice Thursday. “We're going to give him a full week of practice and an opportunity to compete. Tommy practiced [Wednesday]he's better than he was before, so he'll be No. 2. ”

Wouldn't that mean Lock usurped DeVito on the depth chart after playing just one game? How did this happen?

“We thought Drew did good things in Dallas,” Daboll reiterated. “We’re going to give him ample opportunity to go out there and compete again.”

WR Malik Nabors (groin) was added to Thursday's injury report. His participation in practice was limited. Nabors missed two games earlier this year due to a concussion.

LB Bobby Okereke (back), CB Deonte Banks (ribs) and DE Rakeem Nunez-Roches (neck/shoulder) did not practice Thursday. OL Jermaine Elemunor (quad), OL Evan Neal (hip), DL DJ Davidson (shoulder), DE Jordon Riley (knee), S Tyler Nubin (knee), S Dane Belton (hip) ) were restricted.

WR Darius Slayton has been selected as a nominee for the Giants' Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

defense coordinator Shane Bowen I tried to diagnose what was behind the Giants' tackling woes.

“I think we'll continue to stand on our feet,” Bowen said. “I'm trying to keep my feet on the net and make sure I don't let my feet get stuck on contact. This runner is strong. If my feet die on contact, I'll end up falling. So you're trying to stay on your feet and stick your cleats into the ground as much as possible to get them to their feet, which is probably not going to work if you try to go to the ground to make a tackle. It's just about technique and basics and being able to close the space.”
