Giants defensive stars excited about returning to a Wink Martindale-style system

Giants’ New Coordinator: A Return to Familiar Territory?

A branch of John Harbaugh’s coaching family tree, Denard Wilson, has ties to both Mike McDonald and Wink Martindale.

Now that Wilson has stepped into the role of coordinator, it’s natural for Giants fans to wonder if they can expect a revival of the defensive strategy they once knew.

It seems that’s not just wishful thinking.

Edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeau shared insights at the Giants’ town hall meeting on Monday, stating, “For those of you who have been watching the game a long time and know the ball, this is similar to the defense we had when we had Wink.”

His mention of Martindale elicited a wave of applause from fans, recalling Martindale’s resignation after a tumultuous relationship with head coach Brian Daboll post-2023 season.

In 2023, both the Giants and the Harbaugh-McDonald-Wilson-led Ravens were tied for the highest scoring in the NFL, each posting 31 points.

Thibodeau has good reason to be optimistic. He remembers his impactful sack as a rookie in 2022 and enjoyed a breakout season last year, racking up 10.5 sacks under Martindale.

“Don’t underestimate 10.5. It’s hard to get to double digits,” Thibodeau reflected. “For me, it was just promotion, growth, and interacting with seasoned players. I’ve been really putting in the hours and studying the game. The sky’s the limit.”

Despite trade conversations, the Giants decided to keep Thibodeau for the final year of his contract. He hasn’t participated in voluntary workouts lately, even as he seeks an extension. Coach Harbaugh sees him alongside Brian Burns and Abdul Carter as his primary outside linebackers.

The Giants held their first OTA practice on Tuesday, with Burns, who had a career-high 16.5 sacks last season, taking the field. He shared early thoughts on Wilson from their initial chat before practice.

“He removed a lot of the gray area of things,” Burns noted. “He makes things very straightforward, so there’s no confusion. That lets us play as fast as possible.”

He added, “That said, he doesn’t tolerate any nonsense, which I appreciate. He’s clear: ‘I’m not your friend. I’m here to push you to be the best player you can be, and once you’re done playing, we can be friends.’ That’s the kind of respect I want from my defensive coordinator.”

It seems Thibodeau isn’t the only one who might benefit from Wilson’s Martindale-inspired approach.

Another former first-round pick, cornerback Deonte Banks, made a significant impact as a rookie starter last year but is now vying for a spot on the 53-man roster, competing with Paulson Adebo, Greg Newsome II, and Colton Hood.

Harbaugh expressed optimism about his cornerbacks: “I think corners are underrated. I have a feeling these corners will do very well this year.”
