SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants have named former catcher Buster Posey as their new president of baseball operations, firing Farhan Zaidi.
President Greg Johnson made the announcement Monday after the Giants finished coach Bob Melvin's first season with an 80-82 record, one win more than the previous year. San Francisco won the National League West in 2021, but hasn't made the playoffs since.
Posey, 37, joined the club's ownership group in September 2022, less than a year after retiring in November 2021.
“As we look to the future, I am pleased to share that Buster Posey will assume an expanded role as our new president of baseball operations,” Johnson said in a statement. “We are looking for someone who can define, direct and lead the baseball philosophy of this franchise, and we feel Buster is the perfect fit. Buster has the attitude, intelligence and drive to get the job done. , we are confident that he and Bob Melvin will work together to bring winning baseball back to San Francisco.”
Zaidi was acquired by the rival Los Angeles Dodgers in November 2018.

“I would like to thank Mr. Farhan for his contributions to our organization during his six years with the Giants and his passion for making an impact in our community,” Johnson said. “Ultimately, the results were not what we expected. We all take responsibility for that, but we decided that a change was necessary.”
