The New York Giants faced a tough overtime loss on Sunday, but their quarterback reflected on the experience, noting it offered a significant takeaway about resilience, referencing a Bible verse that speaks to trials and perseverance.
Quarterback Jameis Winston went 18 for 36, throwing for 366 yards and two touchdowns, plus he even caught a touchdown pass that gave the Giants a 27-17 advantage. However, Detroit surged back in the fourth quarter, ultimately winning 34-27 in overtime.
Despite accumulating more yards and first downs, the Giants ended the day with a disappointing 2-10 record.
After the game, Winston shared a quote from his mentor, stating, “Success is in the struggle.” He highlighted a biblical perspective, saying, “We must continue to endure. One of my favorite verses is, ‘When you fall into trials, count them all joy, knowing that the trials of your faith produce patience, and that patience works out to perfection, lacking nothing and making you perfect.'” He was referencing James 1:2-4.
“I think this team is going through a pretty testing time,” he noted. “We have to find a way to win. It’s really that simple. I need to step up my game.” He acknowledged that while they’re all a part of this, the coaches have prepared them well, emphasizing the need to find solutions.
Starting the season as a third-string quarterback, Winston stepped into the starter role after Russell Wilson was demoted and Jackson Dart got a concussion. Although Dart’s return could put him back on the bench, he expressed his willingness to play any position that would help the team, including the tight end, as demonstrated by his 33-yard touchdown reception during a trick play.
Winston is well-known for his optimistic demeanor and energy in the NFL, alongside his vocal expressions of faith, often mentioning scripture and prayer in conversations.
Earlier this year, a video of him praying with Pat McAfee and others gained popularity online.
Winston, who won the Heisman Trophy while at Florida State, was drafted into the NFL in 2015.
