Giants Honor 9/11 Victims Before Game Against Cowboys
Before the New York Giants faced off against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, MetLife Stadium hosted a poignant pregame ceremony to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. This tribute was dedicated to the victims and first responders of that tragic day.
As fans entered the stadium, they were greeted by the FDNY’s ceremonial Ladder 343 truck and a genuine steel beam from the World Trade Center, displayed outside thanks to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
To enhance the solemn atmosphere, two beams of light lit up the night sky, reminiscent of the World Trade Center’s “Tribute in Light.” The ceremony featured a touching rendition of the national anthem performed by members of the NYPD and FDNY.
On the field, a massive American flag, 100 yards wide, was held by players, coaches, and Giants season-ticket holders, extending from one end zone to the other.
New York City first responders created a gauntlet for the Giants during player introductions, further emphasizing the event’s significance. Both teams’ players and staff donned commemorative hats representing the NYPD, FDNY, and PAPD. During warm-ups, the players and coaches wore “Never Forget” T-shirts.
Honorary captains for the coin toss included members of the Palumbo family, who lost their father, an FDNY firefighter, on 9/11. A photo montage honoring the lives lost played on the stadium’s video screens during a moment of silence.
Giants legends joined uniformed first responders in leading the crowd in a “Go Big Blue” chant just before the game kicked off.
For new Giants coach John Harbaugh, who recently took the reins after spending 18 seasons in Baltimore, the tribute was particularly meaningful. “It’s a story about heroes who were willing to run toward danger while others were trying to escape it,” he commented. “Being in New York and honoring the heroes of that day who live on in our culture—it means everything. You honor it with your effort.”
With Harbaugh at the helm, there’s a feeling that the Giants are looking forward to better days ahead.
