Giants’ James Hudson Struggles in Opener
ARLINGTON, Texas — The Giants faced significant challenges during their opening drive, largely due to James Hudson, who committed multiple penalties.
Hudson racked up four infractions, leading to a halt in the Giants’ early momentum. Despite the setbacks, Graham Gano managed to score with a 38-yard field goal, thanks in part to Hudson’s penalties.
In a quick decision, head coach Brian Daboll communicated through the headset during a broadcast, opting to bench Hudson and bring rookie Marcus Mbou into the lineup.
Hudson’s day didn’t get any smoother as tensions rose on the sidelines. He struggled to maintain his composure, with offensive line coach Carmen Brissiro attempting to calm him down. Teammates, along with offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, gathered around to help keep him focused.
Hudson’s penalties included two personal fouls and two false starts, one of which pushed the Giants back to the 17-yard line from a promising position in the Cowboys’ territory. Another foul was a dangerous hit to the head, raising questions about potential ejection.
Mbou, originally trained as a right tackle during his time at Purdue, was being prepared by the Giants as a versatile tackle option.
Hudson’s performance allowed six quarterback pressures, contributing to the Giants’ loss in their season opener. This also highlighted the absence of former All-Pro left tackle Andrew Thomas, who missed the first two games due to injury.
Hudson was quickly signed by the Giants during free agency, a move made in search of a solid swing tackle following unsuccessful attempts with guard Josh Ezedo, who is currently on injured reserve to start the season. Hudson’s struggles this game reflected a lack of discipline, possibly stemming from offseason training against players like Brian Burns.
