Giants Special Teams Facing Challenges
One of the top special teams units in the NFL is struggling with a fundamental issue—missing a player on the field. It’s not something you expect from a team of professionals.
During a press conference on Thursday, Giants special teams coordinator Chris Horton acknowledged that there have been multiple instances—specifically at least three times over six games—where they’ve played with one player short during kicks and punts.
“Honestly, it’s pretty embarrassing that this keeps happening,” Horton remarked ahead of practice. “I need to ensure we get a grip on this.”
On the same day, defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson criticized his players for lacking urgency to pursue the ball in their recent loss to the Saints. Horton, however, pointed out that the special teams issues, including penalties that have hindered returns, aren’t due to a lack of effort. Rather, he emphasized that the root problem lies in communication.
“It all begins with me,” Horton said. “I have to effectively communicate with the players. And then, the players need to understand the flow of the game and stay present in the moment. We must get out there, make our calls, and ensure that everyone is accounted for. It’s time to put an end to this.”
After the initial five games, the Giants were ranked No. 3 in the NFL regarding Estimated Points Added for special teams, which essentially measures the value of specific plays by looking at how expected points change throughout the play.
In injury news, linebacker Tremaine Edmunds (shoulder), tight end Chris Manhertz (calf), and cornerback Greg Newsome II (concussion) were sidelined during practice. Others, including cornerback Paulson Adebo (knee), right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor (calf), safety Jevón Holland (concussion), tight end Theo Johnson (neck), wide receiver Charlie Jones (Achilles), offensive tackle Marcus Mbow (knee), safety Tyler Nubin (neck), and left tackle Andrew Thomas (groin), were limited in their participation.
Meanwhile, cornerback Colton Hood (concussion), punter Jordan Stout (right knee), and linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux (illness) improved from limited to full practice participation.
In an effort to prepare for the upcoming game against the Texans, the Giants held a workout for former Citadel punter James Platte. They are looking to familiarize themselves with the left-footed spin, which could be crucial for their punt returners.
