Giants taking a look at top NFL prospects ahead of April draft

The Giants are conducting due diligence ahead of April’s NFL Draft.

Not only did the Giants have a group that included head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schon watch quarterback Michael Penix Jr. at Washington Pro Day, but the team also plans to play quarterback Michael Penix Jr. next season with North Carolina’s Drake Maye. I’m planning on watching JJ McCarthy at Michigan. Several days, according to multiple reports.

The Giants, who still had a presence in North Carolina as of Thursday, plan to train and meet with Maye “in the coming days,” according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

As for McCarthy, Big Blue is scheduled to have a private workout with the 2023 College Football Playoff national champion this weekend, according to Art Stapleton of The Record.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, May and McCarthy previously met with the Giants in New Jersey for a visit in early March.

This move all comes on the heels of an eventful Wednesday where the Giants watched LSU star wide receiver Malik Nabors and 2023 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jaden Daniels in Baton Rouge.

According to the newspaper’s Ryan Dunleavy, the Giants also had dinner with Neighbors the day before practice.

The Giants, who finished 30th in scoring offense (15.6 points per game) and 31st in passing (169.8 yards per game), are looking for a playmaker at quarterback or wide receiver with the No. 1 pick in the draft. All signs point to it.

Schoen said Wednesday he wouldn’t be opposed to drafting a skilled player at the latter position.

“Well, it would be nice to have a No. 1 receiver,” Schoen said. “I think every team signs a particularly offensive head coach.”

Daboll said this week that while there are challenges in evaluating players and who to use during selection, there is also a “fun” aspect to watching quarterbacks.

“There’s no exact scientific explanation for it,” Daboll said. “Obviously not. You do the best job you can. I love doing that. I love evaluating quarterbacks. I love meeting quarterbacks. Together. It’s a great position to work in and a really fun position to evaluate.”

The Giants still have Daniel Jones on the roster after recovering from reconstructive knee surgery, and they brought in Drew Lock on a one-year contract as a backup in front of third-string Tommy DeVito.

But this pro day and upcoming workouts could mean changes in the quarterback room.
