Missing California Girl Found After Six Years
A girl who was abducted in Southern California almost six years ago has been safely found—now living under a false name in North Carolina, authorities have reported.
The now 11-year-old was discovered in Washington County on a Tuesday after officials received tips indicating she was enrolled in local schools using a fake identity.
Law enforcement agencies from North Carolina and California collaborated to locate her and bring her into protective custody.
The victim was just five years old when she was last seen at her home in Duarte, California, on June 2, 2020, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
At the time of her disappearance, there was an ongoing investigation involving her family by the Department of Children and Family Services. Authorities stated the girl’s mother had custody but consequently lost contact with case workers, which led them to suspect her involvement in the child’s vanishing.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office expressed that cases like this ending positively are extremely rare. They emphasized how dedication and teamwork can ultimately yield such remarkable outcomes, offering hope for other missing children.
It’s worth noting that this discovery came just three months after updated age-progression images were released by NCMEC to keep awareness alive.
No arrests have been made concerning the circumstances of the girl’s disappearance as of now. After so long, one might wonder—how does a child adapt to such a drastic change? Also, what support will she need going forward? These are questions that linger as she begins to return to some sense of normalcy.
While the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department have not provided further comments yet, this story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of vigilance and community support in missing persons cases.
