A seemingly simple decision made by one father to leave a concert has turned into a much larger controversy.
This all started when he took his wife and daughters to MetLife Stadium for an Ed Sheeran concert, where Macklemore was the opening act. However, when Macklemore began his performance, he chose to address the audience with a political message.
Glenn Beck, co-founder of Blaze Media, has been discussing the situation and referred to Macklemore as a “giant weenie.”
Beck criticized Macklemore’s approach: “He comes out and instead of just performing, he launches into a political rant demanding that we ‘free Palestine,’ using the concert as a platform for his views, complete with visuals about the ongoing conflict, and performed a song that could be seen as propaganda.”
Then, a father at the concert decided to share his experience on social media. Glenn quotes his post: “‘I brought my wife and daughters to MetLife Friday because they were huge fans of yours,’” which was directed to Sheeran, not Macklemore.
“’We got there early and spent $180 on merchandise. We were enjoying the first two opening acts, then Macklemore turned this into his political rally. He started chanting “Free Palestine,” and it was confusing for my daughters,’” the father continued.
Afterward, he took the time to look into Macklemore’s past comments.
“’What I found was quite troubling given his history of using anti-Semitic rhetoric, which made the situation even more uncomfortable. So, I took my family and we left, along with many other fans. Even the security staff were visibly unimpressed with what was happening on stage. We waited for Macklemore to finish before returning to our seats,’” he explained.
Despite hoping that Sheeran would react to Macklemore’s actions, the following night he allowed the same performance to take place.
“’Friday night was Macklemore’s choice, but Saturday was yours. You have many Jewish fans who appreciate your music and support you by buying albums and attending your concerts,’” he pointed out. “’Tonight, you lost me and I suspect other fans as well.’”
Beck commended the father’s bravery in speaking out, noting, “It took just one person to say, ‘I’ve had enough.’ His actions empowered others to voice the same sentiment.”
In the aftermath of the father’s critique, several stadium owners, where Sheeran and Macklemore were scheduled to perform, asserted, “Our venues won’t be used for that.” Even singer Pink, who often holds different viewpoints, showed her support for the venue owners, resulting in Macklemore being removed from the tour, according to Beck.
“Perhaps this will serve as a wake-up call for those advocating for the Free Palestine movement,” he concluded.
