Glenn Beck: This little town made me think of what America once was

Glenn Beck’s Sister’s Move Sparks Reflection

Recently, Glenn Beck’s sister made a significant change in her life, one that has prompted Glenn to notice something surprising about America today.

According to Glenn, “My sister just moved to Idaho. For most of her life, she lived in the same neighborhood in Bellingham, Washington, which feels, well, like a hub for far-left ideology.” He continues, “It’s a lovely town, but politically, it’s about as left as it gets in this country. And she’s not a far-left person; in fact, she isn’t even a Democrat. So, in a community where political views seemed to dictate social circles, having spent decades on the same street meant she ended up with very few friends.”

Then, he shares the news of her big move to a small town not too far from his place—approximately ten miles away—which happens to be quite religious.

As Glenn drove through this new area, he noticed a striking difference. Families were looking up from their activities just to wave—despite not having a clue who he was. “I saw a mom outside in the yard with her three kids and a garden hose, and as I drove by, they all just smiled and said, ‘Hi!’” he recalls. He observed seniors tending to their gardens, and everyone seemingly waved at passing cars with a friendly demeanor.

When Glenn’s sister had some sod delivered one morning, he found the community’s response rather surprising, though in a positive way. “The sod arrived early, and the landscapers weren’t scheduled until later in the day. So, she was left with a pile of rolled-up grass sitting in her driveway,” he explains.

Interestingly, as the landscapers were due to arrive at five o’clock, the neighbors showed up uninvited. “Men came in work boots, mothers from a church youth group, even a group of teenagers who apparently had nothing better to do on a weeknight than help a new neighbor lay down some grass,” he recounts.

Glenn notes that such kindness is almost non-existent in America nowadays, but it was indeed refreshing to witness. The lawn was completed in under an hour, and soon enough, the youth group had settled down right on his sister’s grass, enjoying pizza together.

He reflects, “It’s a community filled with people who take their faith seriously, just like anyone else in America. The only real membership they cared about was being part of the human family. And she qualified. That was more than enough for them.”
