Glenn Close should have won the Oscar for “Fatal Attraction” instead of Cher

Michael Douglas has reopened debate over Glenn Close’s Oscar loss for “Fatal Attraction,” saying she should have won the award instead of Cher. Cher, in turn, responded warmly to the comments.

Douglas and Close appeared together on “The Graham Norton Show,” where they looked back on the 1987 thriller and the awards season that followed. Close, 79, is due to receive an honorary Academy Award at the Governors Awards on Nov. 15.

“She should have won with ‘Fatal Attraction,’” Douglas, 82, said. When the conversation turned to Cher’s win, Norton expressed surprise. Douglas replied, “I know. That’s what we all said.” He also described Close’s performance as one of the greatest in movie history.

Cher won best actress at the 1988 Academy Awards for playing Loretta Castorini in “Moonstruck,” opposite Nicolas Cage. Close was nominated for her role as Alex Forrest in “Fatal Attraction,” which starred Douglas as a married attorney whose affair leads to increasingly dangerous consequences. The film received six Oscar nominations, including best picture.

A representative for Cher said the singer adores Douglas, offering a friendly note amid renewed discussion of the nearly 40-year-old awards result.
