Global Crackdown on AI-Generated Child Porn Results in 25 Arrests

In a coordinated international project, law enforcement arrested 25 individuals allegedly linked to the distribution of AI-generated child pornography via online platforms.

CBS News Report The global police activity, codenamed Operation Cumberland, led to the arrest of at least 25 individuals in relation to the distribution of child sexual abuse content generated by AI. The operation led by Danish police and involving law enforcement in the European Union, Australia, the UK, Canada and New Zealand, is one of the first major crackdowns on this new form of cybercrime.

Most of the arrests took place on Wednesday during a global operation, according to Europol, an EU law enforcement agency. The arrest followed the arrest of the main suspect, a Danish citizen, in November last year. The suspect is said to have run an online platform that distributed AI-generated child pornography that he produced.

Europol said users around the world can access the platform and view abusive content by making “symbolic online payments” and obtaining passwords. The agency highlighted the challenges investigators face because there is no national law to address crimes that include AI-generated child sexual abuse material. Online child sexual exploitation remains a top priority for EU law enforcement agencies.

This operation also highlights the broader issues with AI-controlled “deepfaki” images. This often uses images of real people, including children, and can have a devastating impact on your life. According to a CBS News report, there were over 21,000 deep fur cake porn photos or videos online in 2023, representing an astonishing 460% increase compared to the previous year. That amount continues to grow rapidly.

Lawmakers in the US and elsewhere are competing to introduce new laws to address the issue. The US Senate recently passed the “Take It Down Act.” This, if signed to the law, criminalizes the publication of intimate images based on non-consensuality, including content generated by AI, and requires the removal of social media platforms to remove such content within 48 hours from the victim.
