Ann Widdecombe, a British politician known for her staunch Catholic beliefs and conservative viewpoints, has faced criticism, particularly from left-leaning individuals. Recently, the 78-year-old, who was a patron and spokesperson for Right to Life and Reform, was found dead in her home in Devon, England. She was a vocal advocate against issues like euthanasia, LGBT rights, climate change alarmism, and immigration policies, as well as a supporter of Brexit.
The suspect, 28-year-old Joshua Kelly, reportedly has far-left views. When police arrived at Widdecombe’s home on July 9, they discovered her body in the kitchen, leading to an immediate investigation since her injuries suggested foul play rather than an accidental fall. A murder inquiry was opened, indicating the incident occurred shortly after noon on July 8.
On July 10, Kelly was arrested on suspicion of murder. Nigel Farage, a notable figure from the Reform Party, characterized Kelly as a “benign authority” who is obsessed with communist ideologies. Initially thought to be a robbery gone wrong, further investigations revealed more complexities.
Reports emerged that Kelly was captured on CCTV early on the day of the murder, leaving a mansion some distance from Widdecombe’s residence. Witnesses noted he appeared to be carrying a suspicious object.
Deputy chief commissioner of Devon and Cornwall Police, Matt Longman, requested the public refrain from speculating on potential political motivations behind the crime, asserting there was no evidence to support such claims. However, an insider from Reform UK expressed concern that the police might be downplaying the situation.
Following some initial confusion regarding Kelly’s involvement, he was re-arrested by counter-terrorism units for charges including murder and incitement of terrorism. The Home Secretary later mentioned that new evidence prompted a shift in the investigation’s direction, suggesting a possibly targeted act.
In the aftermath, it was reported that evidence found at Kelly’s home indicated a strong dislike for Reform UK and its leadership. Nearby residents described Kelly as reclusive and mentioned that he seemed to have been struggling following his father’s recent death.
