Gloria Chapman, spouse of John Lennon's murderer, seen ahead of assassination anniversary

Buffalo, N.Y. — A Complex Love Story

Gloria Chapman, the devoted wife of John Lennon’s assassin Mark David Chapman, has recently been seen wearing her wedding ring outside her home, just days before the 45th anniversary of Lennon’s tragic shooting.

At 75, Gloria stepped into the public eye for the first time in over ten years after relocating from sunny Hawaii to snowy Western New York. This move brought her closer to her husband, who is currently incarcerated.

She made the move in 2019, settling not far from Wende Correctional Facility, where Chapman was held at the time, but he has since been transferred to a different facility in Dutchess County.

The couple met back in 1978 when Gloria was a 26-year-old travel agent in Hawaii and assisted Chapman in planning a trip to Asia. It was a significant connection that led them to a shared religious journey over the years.

Last week, Gloria was spotted clearing snow off her vehicle before attending a church service that lasted nearly three hours.

They had only been married for 16 months on December 8, 1980, when Chapman shot Lennon outside of his Dakota apartment. It was a moment that forever altered their lives.

Upon hearing the news of Lennon’s death while watching television, Gloria sensed the worst. In a 2019 interview, she expressed that deep down, she knew it was her husband involved. Just two months prior, Chapman had confided in her about his dark thoughts regarding Lennon, yet she firmly believes that her love helped him resist those urges.

“My life was flipped upside down,” she shared, reflecting on the gravity of being married to someone who had committed such a notorious crime.

Interestingly, despite the horrific act, Gloria has remained steadfast in her support for Mark for nearly half a century. They’ve shared moments together that include rare visits, where she described their bond as growing stronger. During one of these encounters, she mentioned how they typically start their visits with a kiss. “We are a loving couple,” she affirmed.

When asked about their intimacy during visits, she laughed and stated, “Well, that’s great. Of course, it’s great.” They often share quiet moments, enjoying the scenery and watching other inmates during their limited time together.

Recently, however, Gloria appeared less inclined to discuss her personal life with a reporter, kindly declining an interview request. Meanwhile, Mark, while in prison, manages to maintain their connection through regular chats on his tablet.

Reflecting on his motivations, Chapman remarked that his act of violence stemmed from a desire to gain attention, a perspective he has reiterated throughout his time in prison. He is currently serving a life sentence and is scheduled for parole eligibility in February 2027.
