GM recalling 820,000 pickup trucks over tailgate issue

general motors is recalling approximately 820,000 pickup trucks in North America due to tailgate latches that could dislodge and open unexpectedly.

The recall applies to specific model years from 2020 to 2024. chevrolet silverado 2500, 3500, GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 vehicles with power unlatch tailgate. The recall affects about 570,000 trucks in the U.S. and 250,000 in Canada, making it GM’s largest recall in the U.S. this year and one of the largest recalls ever filed in 2024. It became one.

This issue occurs when the affected pickup truck is parked if water enters the area where the electronic tailgate gate release switch is located. Water intrusion can short out the electronic switch and cause the tailgate to unlatch.

If an unlatched tailgate opens while the vehicle is in motion, loose cargo in the bed of the truck can be lost, creating a road hazard and increasing the risk of a collision.

of Recall notice advises that owners of covered vehicles should ensure the tailgate is closed and latched before driving.

To resolve this issue, use Chevrolet and gmc dealer replaces the outer touchpad switch assembly with a new material that is more resistant to water ingress.

This remedy is not currently available, but once enough parts are available to begin repairing the affected pickup truck, dealers will replace the part at no cost to the customer.

Vehicles in stock and owners seeking interim repairs may have their parts disabled until a replacement part is available.

The automaker plans to send notices to owners of recalled vehicles on March 18th.

GM did not respond to requests for comment.

The company began investigating the issue in November after receiving 136 complaints about tailgates opening under undesirable circumstances.
