Some people on social media were surprised that music was chosen to perform at the funeral of Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States.
At Carter's funeral Thursday at the Washington National Cathedral, Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks sang John Lennon's “Imagine” in front of former presidents and numerous dignitaries.
“It shows the powerlessness of too many established religions in our country.”
Carter was known by many of his supporters as a principled Christian who taught Sunday school at his church for decades. The song choice, known as a communist, anti-Christian anthem, seemed incongruous at best.
“I have [President] Before Joe Biden finished listening to “Imagine,” with the lyrics, “Imagine there's no heaven / It's easy if you do,” the audience heard what Jimmy Carter, a strong Christian, was like. He is lecturing us about this, and I question the credibility of his claims. ” answered Talk radio host Erik Erickson.
“Do you think these are appropriate lyrics to sing at someone's death? Imagine there's no heaven. You're a bunch of godless communists.” read Another tweet.
“I was stunned when two country singers started singing John Lennon's 'Imagine.' answered Bishop Robert Barron. “Vested interests sat patiently while hymns to atheistic humanism were sung. This is not only an insult to the memory of devout Christians, but also an insult to the established religions of too many of our countries. It also showed their powerlessness.”
Others used the opportunity to joke.
“To be fair, they were Episcopalians. That's hardly a real church anyway.” answered Commentator Emily Zanotti.
At the funeral, Vice President Kamala Harris was caught on camera grimacing as she watched an exchange between former President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump.
