Tragic Incident in Florida: Mother Killed in Murder-Suicide
In a devastating incident this week, Crystal Kenney, a Florida mother, was shot and killed in what has been described as a tragic Christmas week murder-suicide. Friends have called her the “foundation” of her family while organizing an online fundraiser for her children.
The shooting occurred on Monday during a drunken altercation, reportedly triggered when her husband, Joseph Kenney, asked her to stop watching a football game. Authorities state that Joseph then shot Crystal and also wounded their 13-year-old daughter before fleeing the scene and taking his own life.
As of now, the daughter remains hospitalized in critical condition, although she is expected to survive. Many are mourning the loss of Crystal, with the fundraiser noting, “We share the heartbreaking loss of Crystal, a loving and devoted mother whose life was taken far too soon.”
According to the GoFundMe campaign, which has raised approximately $10,000, Crystal leaves behind three children, including her critically injured daughter. Fundraiser organizers indicated that the money will help cover funeral expenses, support the teen’s recovery, and provide long-term assistance for the children adjusting to life without their mother.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd mentioned that the situation escalated after Crystal suggested canceling the football game while under the influence of alcohol. In the midst of the argument, her 12-year-old son managed to escape to a neighbor’s house to call 911, reporting that he was running just as the gunfire erupted.
When authorities arrived, they found Crystal dead from gunshot wounds, while her daughter had been shot in the face and shoulder but survived what law enforcement has called a “Christmas miracle.” Their one-year-old daughter was found safe, asleep in her crib.
Subsequently, Joseph fled and ultimately took his own life at his late father’s home as police surrounded the area.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, friends and neighbors have rallied around the surviving children, providing meals and support. One friend, Krystal Locklear Rusticas, expressed gratitude for the community’s assistance, stating that many have offered to help take care of the children.
She highlighted Crystal’s fierce devotion to her children, noting that she made holidays special for them and that they would always feel immensely loved. Rusticas emphasized the importance of community support, with children clinging to one another for comfort during this traumatic time.
“She will live on in the hearts of everyone who loved her,” Rusticas wrote, vowing to continue providing support for the Kenney family during this difficult period.
