James Van Der Beek’s GoFundMe Surpasses $2 Million Mark

Organizers of a GoFundMe for James Van Der Beek have announced that they have raised over $2 million in donations. This comes after they indicated that the actor’s family was in “urgent need of funds” following his passing.

The impressive sum is largely thanks to contributions from Van Der Beek’s high-profile friends, including Zoe Saldaña, Derek Hough, and Steven Spielberg, all of whom have given generously to support the family of the late “Dawson’s Creek” star. An update on the fundraiser, shared on February 12th, expressed gratitude towards fans for their contributions.

On February 11th, Van Der Beek died at the age of 48 after battling colorectal cancer. His wife, Kimberly, who has six children with him, shared the heartbreaking news in an emotional social media post.

In her message, she praised the community’s support, saying, “Your kindness meant more than we can express. In the midst of deep grief, your support was a light. It reminds us that love is real, community is strong, and the spirit of James continues to bring people together.” She acknowledged the family’s financial struggles during this challenging time, stating that they were overwhelmed by the support from the public.

Erin Featherston, a designer and friend of the family, noted the genuine need for assistance. She emphasized how difficult it has been for the family, especially for Kimberly, who has not only lost her husband but also endured the loss of a child in the past. Featherston expressed her gratitude towards the many who have donated, saying that such support can help stabilize the family’s situation in the wake of their profound loss.

Donors, including The Spielbergs, who contributed $250,000, have played a crucial role in helping the family. Other notable contributions came from Saldaña and director Jon M. Chu, among others.

The crowdfunding initiative started with a goal of $250,000, but as support poured in, it was raised to $1.5 million, and has now far exceeded that target.

On social media, discussions about the GoFundMe have sparked mixed reactions. Some users expressed support and highlighted the broader issues that families face when dealing with medical crises, while others questioned why donations are directed toward celebrities.

James Van Der Beek leaves behind his wife and six children: Olivia, Annabelle, Emilia, Gwendolyn, Joshua, and Jeremiah. He had previously announced his cancer diagnosis to the public and had shared optimism about his treatment progress, although his health sadly took a turn for the worse.

Since his passing, tributes from fellow “Dawson’s Creek” actors and others in the entertainment industry have filled social media, remembering him fondly and celebrating his contributions to film and television.
