Jerry Turner Reflects on His Journey Following Cancer Diagnosis
Jerry Turner, a 74-year-old Indiana widow, made a splash as the first senior star of ABC’s reality romance series, The Golden Bachelor. During his stint on the show, he found love and married Teresa Nist on live television in January 2024. However, just a few months later, in April 2024, they announced their separation. In December of that same year, Turner revealed he had been diagnosed with slow-growing, incurable bone marrow cancer.
His condition, known as Waldenström macroglobulinemia, prompted him to pen a memoir titled “Golden Years.”
In a recent conversation with FOX News Digital, Turner shared his thoughts on living with cancer. “You can live like you’re dying,” he remarked, reflecting on how the diagnosis changed his perspective. He admitted he had always been a driven individual, focused on his career. Yet, after hearing the diagnosis, he softened, learning to appreciate life’s small joys and the emotions of those around him.
Turner’s cancer was discovered during an orthopedic appointment for a recurring shoulder issue. He described the shock of learning he had cancer but also felt a sense of relief knowing that he might outlive the disease, as treatment isn’t required until certain symptoms manifest. This has led him to regular blood tests to monitor his condition.
Despite the emotional turmoil of the diagnosis, Turner expressed how it also opened his eyes to deeper connections. He mentioned feeling significant sorrow when he realized he hadn’t received much support from others, including Nist, after his diagnosis became public knowledge. “We don’t talk anymore. There’s really no reason to,” he said about Nist.
Nist responded to comments from Turner in a previous interview, expressing sadness over his feelings of emptiness during their time together. She wished he had been more vocal about his struggles instead of leaving things unresolved.
Recently, Turner announced his engagement to Lana Sutton, a significant step just 15 months after his divorce from Nist. His daughters were instrumental in encouraging him to join The Golden Bachelor following the passing of his first wife, Toni, in 2017. Turner recounted his immediate connection with Sutton, stating, “It feels different… in a good way.”
They share many common interests, including travel and cooking, which has led to a comforting companionship. Turner emphasized the importance of remaining open to new experiences and relationships, particularly for those looking to find love again later in life. He encouraged others to embrace invitations to new activities and to maintain hope as they navigate their journeys, even in the face of hardships.
Reflecting on his experience, Turner described life as a marathon, where one must endure pain and challenges before rising to continue on. His journey, filled with twists and turns, has ultimately illuminated the potential for new beginnings, even after loss.
Turner’s memoir, The Golden Years: What I Learned from Love, Loss, and Reality TV, is available now and details his life lessons through love and loss.
