Golden Boot competition becomes more intense at the World Cup as quarterfinals approach

In the upcoming 2026 World Cup, the competition for the Golden Boot has been narrowed down from 48 teams to just eight. This means that each goal scored carries double the significance in the race for this prestigious award.

The Round of 16 was packed with drama, especially when Argentina, led by Golden Boot frontrunner Lionel Messi, found themselves on the verge of elimination. However, in a thrilling twist, they managed to claw back from a two-goal deficit, snatching a surprising 3-2 victory against Egypt in the last 11 minutes. This comeback allowed Messi to reclaim the lead in the Golden Boot race, overtaking French star Kylian Mbappé.

Meanwhile, Norway’s Erling Haaland made headlines by netting two goals during his team’s remarkable upset over Brazil, a five-time World Cup champion.

In England’s match against Mexico, captain Harry Kane increased his total to six goals, while his teammate Jude Bellingham added two in that same game, keeping the competition tight.

The situation now is really interesting—not just in terms of who is scoring but also who isn’t. With Brazil’s loss, Vinicius Junior lost his chance at a late surge in this competition. Additionally, Cristiano Ronaldo’s hopes for a consecutive Golden Boot came to an end after Spain’s win over Portugal. The U.S. and Mexico also saw their players, Folarin Balogun and Julián Quiñones, eliminated from contention.

The list of contenders is shrinking quickly, much like the tournament itself. As we shift our focus to the quarter-finals, the contest between Messi, Mbappé, and Haaland continues, though there’s also a chance that one or all could be knocked out.

Historically, the top scorer tends to emerge from the final match. With only eight teams left, the possibilities are quite limited. For now, Messi is certainly in pursuit of that Golden Boot.

The current standings for the Golden Boot, as of the Round of 16, are as follows:

8 goals

7 goals

  • Kylian Mbappé, France
  • Erling Haaland, Norway

6 goals

4 goals

  • Mikel Oyarzabal, Spain
  • Ousmane Dembele, France
  • Jude Bellingham, UK
