Update on Alligator Alcatraz Immigration Facility
The immigration detention facility commonly referred to as ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ has received some significant news regarding its fate.
Although the facility is currently closed, sources have confirmed that Bender has been told to demobilize.
Republican Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida hinted recently that the facility might permanently shut down, mentioning that it had fulfilled its role by processing around 22,000 immigrants.
CBS News indicated that multiple informants stated that a “demobilization” clause in the contract had been activated, which means the operators will be compensated for the shutdown.
“All vendors have been notified,” an official commented.
This facility has encountered numerous legal challenges, which have hindered the federal reimbursement of the state’s reported $1.2 billion expenses—a figure that has increased from an initial estimate of $450 million.
On Wednesday, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, Lauren Biss, announced that all detainees had been relocated due to the approaching hurricane season.
The facility, which began operations in July 2025, was situated on an 11,000-foot-long abandoned runway in the Florida Everglades.
Critics argue that the conditions within the facility are unsafe and inhumane, citing insufficient restrooms, spoiled food, and limited access to legal representation.
“The state and federal governments must permanently shut this facility and ensure that no one is housed there again,” stated Amy Godshall from the ACLU, which previously launched a lawsuit against the facility.
A report from WFOR-TV mentioned that there are currently no signs indicating that the site will be demolished.
The facility was originally designed to accommodate about 3,000 detainees, aimed at alleviating the overcrowding issues faced by immigration authorities.
DeSantis had previously emphasized that, from a security standpoint, the potential for escape was very concerning, especially with the presence of crocodiles nearby. He had described the facility as a temporary measure when it opened.
