Goodbye! Anarchist Bomb Makers End Up Blowing Themselves Up

Investigation Launched After Deaths of Anarchist Activists

Italian authorities are looking into the deaths of two well-known anarchist activists discovered in the ruins of a farmhouse that exploded, allegedly due to a bomb they were preparing.

The bodies were found in an abandoned farmhouse on the outskirts of Rome. Because of its isolated location, it seems neighbors didn’t hear the explosion on Thursday. The alarm was raised when a jogger spotted a body among the debris of the collapsed structure.

Initially, police thought the deceased could be homeless individuals caught in the disaster. However, they changed their assessment when they noticed one victim had a severed arm and a distinctive tattoo, prompting further investigation into explosives. The victims have been identified as Alessandro Mercogliano, 53, and his girlfriend Sara Ardizzone, 35, both known for their far-left anarchist views.

According to the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, Mercogliano had a troubling history, having been imprisoned for five years in 2019 for involvement in an anarchist terrorist group that used explosives against various targets, including politicians and police. He was also on trial for another attack in Turin.

Ardizzone, during an earlier trial, had stated that she and Mercogliano were “partners in life and in struggle,” identifying as anarchists and viewing themselves as adversaries of the state.

The couple was linked to a group advocating for direct action in support of Alfredo Cospito, an anarchist serving a life sentence. Cospito had previously been notorious for blowing up a police barracks.

Authorities speculate that Mercogliano might have been in the process of assembling explosives at the time of the blast and lost his arm due to the accident. They are exploring whether the bomb, intended to be made from fertilizer, was unstable enough to cause a spontaneous explosion.

Police have been investigating local anarchist networks and have questioned several known activists to gather more information regarding the incident. A crucial question in the inquiry is the intended target of the explosives. Some reports suggest the farmhouse’s proximity to a railway junction could indicate that it was chosen deliberately, given the history of anarchist attacks on such infrastructure.

Possible targets for anarchist activity also include facilities linked to the Italian defense and aerospace company, Leonardo. A government spokesperson remarked that the incident raises questions about whether the explosive devices were meant to undermine democracy directly.

Meanwhile, Italy’s right-wing Populist Alliance party has commented on the bombing, arguing that the deaths of the anarchists highlight the violent objectives of the far-left. They claimed that the nation has endured too long of a struggle against anarchists who threaten infrastructure.

Reports also indicate that Ardizzone had been involved in aggressive confrontations during the 2022 election campaign, where anarchist groups clashed with members of opposing political factions.
