Donovan’s Reaction to Banks’ Decision
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, excitement is building among soccer enthusiasts, especially since the tournament will take place in the United States and across North America. However, it seems the U.S. men’s national team may not be a strong competitor for the championship just yet.
To boost their chances, the U.S. needs to recruit its top talents. It might sound straightforward, but it’s particularly crucial at the World Cup level, where the brightest stars from around the globe gather. One notable player is Noahkai Banks, a defender with FC Augsburg in Germany’s Bundesliga.
Banks, who hails from Honolulu, has dual heritage with an American father and a German mother, allowing him the choice of representing either nation. He has played for the U.S. in various youth competitions and recently received a call-up to the USMNT’s camp ahead of the upcoming World Cup. However, he turned down the invitation and is now weighing whether to commit to the U.S. or Germany. This decision has not gone unnoticed, especially by American soccer icon Landon Donovan, who is quite upset over it.
Donovan has been vocal about the situation, stating firmly that if Banks doesn’t want to play for the U.S., he should be cut from the program entirely. He expressed, “From the federation’s perspective, especially Matt Crocker’s, if someone doesn’t want to play for your country, let them go. I’m not angry with him; he can choose. But it doesn’t matter to me anymore.”
He continued, “I really have no worries about Banks. If he prefers to represent Germany, that’s his choice. I’ve always said to follow your passion. He’s attended several camps; the federation has shown interest for a long time. This idea of us begging him to play for our country is ridiculous.”
So, Banks, it might be time to consider your options—are there even any Americans still rooting for you amid this whole situation?
