Google acknowledges censorship during the Biden administration, YouTube reinstates MAGA content

Google admits censorship under Biden, YouTube welcomes back MAGA

Recently, Google acknowledged that its censorship policy implemented during the COVID era was enacted at the request of the Biden administration. The company also stated it would allow previously silenced content creators to return to YouTube. This development is considered a significant win for freedom of speech, highlighting the ongoing fight against governmental pressure on tech firms.

This new policy announcement came after an investigation led by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan. Inquiring about Google’s moderation practices during Biden’s administration, Alphabet, Google’s parent company, responded with a statement indicating that senior officials from the Biden administration had made persistent outreach efforts. They aimed to influence Google’s moderation policies while claiming that they were not violating any rules.

Alphabet accused the Biden administration of fostering a “political atmosphere” that tried to sway platform decisions based on misinformation concerns.

The statement revealed that Alphabet had already revised its election integrity policies, which had previously resulted in content removals on YouTube. Now, they will welcome back creators who had been penalized under those guidelines.

This could raise concerns about the return of what some might call conspiracy theorists. Viewers might remember that The Hill’s channel faced a temporary ban recently for allegedly violating rules, which YouTube now admits were misapplied.

What happened? Back in March 2022, the channel was informed it breached election integrity policies for spreading false information about the 2020 election, spurred by footage from a Donald Trump rally where he claimed the election had been stolen. What’s odd is how YouTube’s previous guidelines failed to differentiate between Trump’s statements and news reports discussing them.

At that time, my co-hosts Ryan Grimm and Kim Iversen joined me in analyzing this incident after our brief suspension.

Fast forward over three years, and I don’t hold YouTube entirely responsible. There’s substantial pressure from the government on platforms like Twitter and Facebook to control what is said, particularly regarding sensitive topics such as COVID and the 2020 elections. There’s a term for this—jawboning—which refers to officials pressuring businesses into action, and it’s troubling.

Mainstream media had been quite vocal about potential government influences during the Trump administration, yet similar actions by the Biden administration have gone underreported. An example includes Jake Tupper’s response, as Jimmy Kimmel noted that this could be one of the most significant breaches of free speech he’s witnessed.

While I concur that jawboning is concerning and that regulatory bodies should uphold freedom of speech, it’s crucial to recognize that this isn’t a new issue. Under pressure from the federal government, social media companies implemented extensive censorship. The dynamics have shifted now, yet it’s essential for mainstream liberals to remember the implications of this when it was impacting us.
