Tech giant Google has addressed concerns raised by prominent conservatives about its search autocomplete feature, specifically the censorship of searches related to the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The global overlord claims to be “working on improvements,” including to the autocomplete feature.
luck Reports Google has issued a statement addressing the controversy surrounding its autocomplete search results in the wake of allegations of election interference and search manipulation. The controversy erupted after a number of users on Twitter, including Elon Musk and Donald Trump Jr., posted an image showing how Google’s search engine filters out certain politically sensitive topics from its autocomplete predictions.
The main focus of the discussion centered on searches related to the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Breitbart News previously reported that users noted that when they typed “assassination attempt” into Google’s search bar, the autocomplete feature did not suggest any recent incidents involving Trump. Instead, it offered suggestions related to historical figures, such as former President Ronald Reagan and musician Bob Marley.
In response to these allegations, a Google spokesperson provided Fortune with an explanation. The company said that no “manual actions” have been taken against the autocomplete predictions and that it is “working to improve” the feature. Regarding the lack of suggestions related to assassination attempts, Google explained that its system has “protections against autocomplete predictions related to political violence” and that it was working as intended prior to the recent incidents.
A spokesperson provided further elaboration on the “Donald Duck” search highlighted by Musk, acknowledging that “autocomplete is not currently working as intended” for searches related to past presidents and the current vice president, and assured that Google is investigating the anomalies and will implement fixes soon.
The controversy has sparked a broader debate about the role of tech companies in disseminating information and their potential impact on political discourse, with critics, including prominent Republicans, accusing Google of “gaslighting” people and trying to influence the 2024 presidential election through its search results.
Google emphasized that its autocomplete system is dynamic, with predictions changing based on common and trending queries. The company expressed its commitment to making its system more up-to-date and responsive to current events while maintaining safeguards against incitement to violence.
