Sen. Blackburn Criticizes Google Over AI Model Controversy
Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) expressed concerns in a letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai about the AI model Gemma, asserting that removing it from the company’s platform won’t stop the spread of “clearly false and defamatory” statements about herself and other conservatives.
In her correspondence, Blackburn accused Gemma AI of generating misinformation that she believes has defamed her. This letter was a response to Google’s own explanation regarding Gemma’s “defamatory” claims, which included accusations of sexual assault. Blackburn found Google’s reasoning unpersuasive.
In Blackburn’s letter, which was made available by various sources, she characterized Google’s failure to monitor Gemma as a significant oversight, citing that the model has been downloaded over 200 million times. She suggested this reflects a deeper issue of perceived anti-conservative bias in Google’s offerings.
Blackburn further argued that simply taking Gemma down isn’t enough. She emphasized that:
“Google has confirmed that Gemma remains fully accessible to developers, who continue to use the same underlying model across many applications. Removing it from AI Studio doesn’t stop the distribution of the model. That means the harmful content isn’t really gone—it keeps getting reshaped and spread in ways that Google doesn’t fully control.”
She indicated that Google has been aware of these issues for years, calling out the company’s inaction as a failure to ensure the technology isn’t harmful. Blackburn pointed out that similar queries do not produce such damaging claims in other models, highlighting choice in design as a determining factor.
During a recent Senate Commerce Committee meeting, Blackburn referred to instances where Gemma AI accused conservative activist Robbie Starbuck of serious crimes, a situation that Google has acknowledged as a known problem they aim to resolve.
Blackburn’s stance is clear: “The AI model should be completely shut down until we can ensure it operates responsibly. Americans deserve an AI system that’s accurate and fair, rather than one that can be used to falsely accuse conservatives.” She criticized Google’s explanation as an inadequate attempt to deflect responsibility, insisting that it fails to address the root causes of the issue and necessary preventive measures moving forward.
