The company announced on Monday that American Bay and Mount Mackinley will soon appear on Google Maps and reflect President Trump's decision to rename two terrain characteristics.
Google said that the mainstay of navigation would make changes as soon as the interior department updated the geographic name information system.
“I received some questions about the naming in Google Maps,” Tech Giant posted on Monday evening. “There have been many years of practice to apply a name change when updated by the official government's source.”
When GNIS changes, Google moves to “quickly update the US Google Map to display Mount Mackinley and American Bay.”
The company stated that the future update has been followed by long -standing practices on the official name of different places.
Google Map Users “display official local names” based on their location. Therefore, for non -US users, Google Maps may have a previous name, Mexico Bay and Mount Denari with new ones.
“Everyone in the other world is looking at both names,” Google said in the X post. “That's true here.”
Denari Mountain, which will soon be returned to Macinly Mountain, was renamed President Obama in 2015 in response to the request of the Alaska native group, Kooucon. Since 1975, they have been fighting to change their names to Denari.
