Google’s Major Investment in AI and Energy
Google plans to invest $25 billion into data centers across the largest electrical grid in the U.S. over the next two years, which they believe will significantly bolster their efforts in artificial intelligence.
Ruth Porat, the president and chief investment officer, is slated to join President Trump at an AI Summit in Pennsylvania for this announcement.
“We’re aligning with President Trump’s urgent vision to capitalize on this opportunity so that America remains at the forefront of AI,” Porat commented in a statement.
In addition to this investment, Google has also allocated $3 billion to revitalize two hydroelectric power plants in Pennsylvania. These plants have a combined capacity exceeding 670 megawatts, essential for addressing the rising demand for electricity.
This funding forms part of a 20-year deal Google has struck with Brookfield Asset Management, which involves the acquisition of 3,000 megawatts of hydroelectric power across the United States.
The initial focus will be on the Mid-Atlantic region and the Central continental market, as outlined in a recent Brookfield press release.
“Working with Brookfield is a significant move towards ensuring we have a reliable clean energy source in the PJM region where we operate,” remarked Amanda Peterson, Google’s head of data center energy.
She added, “Hydropower is a reliable and cost-effective technology that supplies dependable, homegrown, carbon-free energy while also creating jobs.”
The PJM interconnections, known as the largest electrical grid in the country, are finding it challenging to meet the demands of increasingly power-intensive data centers.
This grid spans across 13 states including parts of the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and South, housing the biggest data center market globally in Northern Virginia.
Trump is expected to unveil $70 billion in investments related to AI and energy at the summit on Tuesday, as reported by Bloomberg.
Meanwhile, other tech industry leaders are ramping up their AI investments too. Just recently, Mark Zuckerberg shared that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is planning to spend hundreds of billions on constructing a new AI data center.
