Google Takes Action Against AI Researcher Over Controversial Comments

Google has recently taken steps to limit posts from a prominent AI researcher, Noam Shazeer, following controversial remarks about transgender individuals and accusations of anti-Semitism aimed at some colleagues.

Shazeer, who recently became co-head of Google’s flagship AI model development after the acquisition of Character.AI for $2.7 billion, made comments that reportedly caused unease among his coworkers. This was particularly highlighted in a thread discussing the Spring International Day of Transgender Visibility.

“I do not believe that humans have an attribute called gender,” Shazeer stated, according to The Information. He went on to express his disbelief in the idea that “G-d puts people in the wrong bodies,” and questioned the ethics of sterilizing children, adding that while everyone has a right to their beliefs, he certainly doesn’t share them.

This post sparked significant backlash, with Shazeer’s then-manager, Jeff Dean, calling for a more supportive environment for all employees. “Norm, we don’t have to agree on everything, but as leaders, we should support the entire community,” Dean reportedly told Shazeer.

David Silver, a senior employee within Google’s DeepMind division, also voiced his concerns, stating, “Leadership is a privilege, and the words we speak matter.”

According to reports, Shazeer’s post was removed by internal moderators, but he claimed he does not anticipate facing any disciplinary measures. Previously, he had been banned from internal communication channels due to complaints regarding his anti-Semitic allegations against colleagues.

Shazeer had disagreements with his coworkers over Google’s relaxed policies on developing AI technologies potentially applicable for military or surveillance purposes. Employees expressed worry that this technology could be used by Israel amid its conflict with Hamas.

Reports also indicate that Shazeer, who is Jewish, often accused coworkers of anti-Semitism whenever they criticized Google’s policy adjustments. Some sarcastic comments surfaced about a planned lunchtime meeting for Google employees in London, which was characterized as a move to sideline anti-Semitic discussions.

Moderators were reported to have removed Shazeer from the communication channel where these exchanges occurred.

Google has not provided any comments regarding this situation. The company has strict policies governing internal message boards, which discourage discussions that could make employees feel unwelcome or undermine their dignity.

Last year, Google also took action against posts regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict, which some employees interpreted as anti-Semitic, leading to claims from Arab and Muslim employees that their voices were being stifled. Additionally, in 2024, the company terminated over 20 employees after they protested within offices in New York and California.

CEO Sundar Pichai reminded employees in a memo last year that Google should remain a workplace devoid of political discourse, emphasizing that the company is “a business and not the place for behavior that disrupts colleagues or makes them feel unsafe.”
