GOP Governors Should Follow Trump's Example on Census and Redistricting

Trump’s Call for a New Census

Since President Donald Trump announced his presidential campaign in 2015, he’s been encouraging fellow Republicans to “fight, fight, fight.” Opting for bold leadership over playing it safe can be tough in politics. Yet, it’s crucial when it comes to America’s future. This is why Trump is advocating for a revised census that addresses issues with flawed data.

The president believes that the census shouldn’t include illegal immigrants. This perspective stems from basic common sense, even if it’s hard for some on the left to accept. Counting undocumented individuals skews representation for American citizens. It’s important that all governors, regardless of party affiliation, take the lead in ensuring an accurate census, as it ultimately helps them serve their constituents better. The focus should be on American citizens and those legally in the country—the hardworking taxpayers who form the backbone of our society.

With the current political climate leaning heavily in one direction, it’s up to Republican governors to step up. Many seem to subscribe to a notion of prioritizing America first, which, frankly, isn’t always the case with their Democratic counterparts. The right approach, in this instance, would be to align with Trump’s vision for a census that accurately reflects those legally residing in the U.S.

Moreover, GOP governors should promptly review and update their congressional maps to ensure they represent current demographics accurately. Historically, Democratic states have gained distortion in congressional representation by manipulating district boundaries. It’s become clear that every tool has been utilized by the left to achieve their political ambitions. Now, it’s time for Republicans to band together and take decisive action.

As we approach the 2026 midterm elections, Republicans find themselves with a slim 220-215 majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. Democrats are sensing an opportunity and may try to exploit it through district manipulations, just as they did during Trump’s initial term when numerous controversies were thrown their way.

For instance, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom is now attempting to redraw the state’s congressional map, which could greatly affect the political landscape, especially if the Democrats regain a majority in the House. If that happens, Trump’s agenda could stall completely, especially under the leadership of progressive figures. We cannot let this situation unfold without strong resistance to protect our Constitutional Republic.

Take Maryland, for example. Just 25 years back, the state had an equal distribution of Democrats and Republicans in Congress. Fast forward to today, and the representation has tilted heavily in favor of Democrats. The left has strategically maneuvered to gain control, driving conservative voices out of the state. This isn’t an isolated case.

A solid GOP governor, like Nebraska’s Jim Pillen, needs to stay vigilant. Trump carried Nebraska with about 60% of the vote in the last election, but Republicans must be on guard to retain their positions, especially in districts that are crucial. Meanwhile, look at Massachusetts, where the political landscape has become so challenging for Republicans that winning a seat seems near impossible.

Furthermore, New Hampshire—with a Republican governor—shouldn’t have a situation where there are two Democrats and no Republicans in Congress. Given how narrow the margins were in recent elections, it’s clear that congressional maps are skewed, and Gov. Chris Sununu needs to reassess them to better reflect the voters’ intentions.

Additionally, Nevada’s Governor Joe Lombardo should get involved too. Despite Trump winning the state by a slim margin in the 2024 elections, only one of the four congressional districts has a Republican representative.

Whether we want to admit it or not, these are uncommon times. Starting with correcting an inaccurate census is essential. We can’t afford to let illegal immigrants or poorly drawn congressional maps dictate the lives of American citizens who fund the system. Immediate and bold action is necessary.
