GOP Is Bad for Stymieing Border Deal with Many ‘Troublesome’ Elements

On MSNBC’s “Jose Díaz-Balart Report” airing Thursday, Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) said many of the reported details of the border deal were “troubling” and that negotiations would not be possible. criticized that it did not include relief for people in conflict areas. But Republicans criticized the deal, saying they were only seeking chaos by blocking the deal.

Padilla said.[A] Much of what we hear is troubling. Because, frankly, much of it is a ploy by President Trump, a set of policies that have proven not to work. You could call it Title 42, the presidential power to “close the borders,” but we know it didn’t work under the Trump administration, and we can’t expect it to work again. No one disputes that there is no need to modernize immigration law as a whole. But my Republican colleagues who advocate closing borders and “depopulation” have no intention of seriously discussing the root causes. If we are serious about the number of people coming to the United States seeking asylum or seeking economic opportunity, let’s have a responsible and thoughtful conversation. But we haven’t heard anything like that from our negotiators. ”

“The other thing that’s been lost in the chaos here is some relief for the Dreamers and essential workers and farmworkers who are already here, contributing to our economy and contributing to the security of our country,” he added. ” he added.

Then host Jose Díaz Balart said: “Senator, you’re talking about that kind of outside influence. Donald Trump is trying to undermine any deal, and it looks like a lot of House and Senate Republicans are following his lead.”

Padilla replied: “Jose, that’s fine. Were the Republicans honest from the beginning or they weren’t? Because you can’t have it both ways. What we face at the border is a crisis and You can’t say in public that we need to act urgently and then say, well, let’s wait until November to do something and see how the election goes. About that. Senate. Some Republicans want to ensure that Mayorkas is present during negotiations and consensus-building, but they can’t take sides.[as], the House is moving to impeach him. You can’t have it both ways. And Republicans seem to be just playing more and more political games. In the previous segment, we explained what’s going on in Texas where Governor Abbott (R) is literally deploying the National Guard to prevent federal agents from doing their jobs and securing the border. In other words, all they want is chaos. They certainly make a lot of it. But let’s not let them escape. ”
