Rep. Chuck Edwards, RN.C., said Wednesday that Republicans are holding town halls despite recent pushing in-person town halls and doing phone calls and live streams.
“Next week we have the City Hall in Asheville, North Carolina. First of all, my constituents wanted it,” Edwards told News Nation's Blake Berman on “The Hill.”
“I… I trust my constituents, even things I might not agree with, but more than that, I am proud of what Republicans are achieving right now, and I would like the opportunity to talk about that,” he added.
Earlier this week, Rep. Richard Hudson (RN.C.) told House Republicans at a closed-door athletic conference that they should go to in-person town halls that democratic activists can take over and teletown halls and live-streamed events that could reach more people.
Republican lawmakers recently dealt with an angry crowd at a town hall event. In particular, the Trump administration is trying to cut down thousands of government jobs.
On Monday, President Trump attributed the town hall backlash to “paying 'troublemakers'” on his true social platform.
“Paying 'troublemakers' are attending Republican City Hall meetings. It's all part of the Democratic game, but like our big landslide elections, it won't work for them! ” Trump said on social media.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) last week claimed that recent City Hall protesters had been “paid” by Democrats.
“The town hall video was aimed at paid protesters in many of those places,” Johnson told Kaitlan Collins of CNN at the time. “These are Democrats who went to events early and filled their seats.”
