GOP lawmaker requests Intel committee to obtain immigration records of 'Squad' Rep Ilhan Omar

Tennessee Lawmakers Seek Immigration Records of Rep. Ilhan Omar

Republican lawmakers in Tennessee are pushing for the release of immigration records concerning Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar. They aim to determine if the “Squad” member is legally in the United States.

“I want to know if she’s here legally, and if she’s not, we need to take appropriate action,” stated Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) in a recent interview.

Burchett made his request to the House Intelligence Committee shortly before Omar confronted President Trump during the State of the Union. This interaction followed Trump’s remarks about election fraud while criticizing Democrats for remaining seated.

The efforts to acquire Omar’s immigration records were initiated last month when Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) moved to have the House Oversight Committee subpoena them, not just for Omar but also for her two former husbands, Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi and Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.

Mace mentioned, “Public reporting has raised serious allegations that Congresswoman Omar entered into a legal marriage in 2009 to a man she informally recognized as her brother in order to secure her legal immigration status. Additionally, reports indicate that she had previously entered into a religious marriage in 2002 that wasn’t legally dissolved until several years later.”

President Trump claimed online that Omar married his brother to gain citizenship, something Omar has strongly denied, calling it a “disgusting lie.”

This claim, which originated on a Somali forum, suggests that Elmi is Omar’s brother and that their marriage was for immigration purposes.

Omar arrived in the U.S. as a refugee from Somalia in 1995, when she was just 12 years old. In 2016, it came to light that she had applied for a marriage license to Hirsi in 2002, although the application was never fully completed.

She shares three children with Hirsi and legally married Elmi in 2009, but they divorced through Islamic rites.

Omar became a U.S. citizen in 2000.

In 2020, she married Tim Mynett, a political operative from Minnesota. Recently, the rapid financial growth of Mynett’s wine and investment business, as revealed in Omar’s 2024 financial disclosures, has prompted calls for an investigation from the House Ethics Committee. Mynett’s ex-wife, Beth Mynett, a doctor in Washington, D.C., previously accused him of infidelity during their shocking divorce in 2019.

Burchett asserts that the Information Commissioner’s Office should have jurisdiction to obtain these records, although he hasn’t yet received a response to his request. Another Republican, Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), chairman of the House Oversight Committee, has initiated his own investigation into the significant increase in Omar’s wealth.

A spokeswoman for the oversight committee noted that Mynett missed a February 19 deadline to submit requested financial documents. After starting the initial investigation, Comer indicated that the House Ethics Committee is the appropriate body to address Omar’s financial situation. However, details about the investigation have not been publicly disclosed.

Omar has not yet responded to requests for comment.
