GOP Legislators Support Effort to Eliminate Healthcare Rule from Biden Administration

Republicans Push to Repeal Biden-Era VA Abortion Rules

Republican lawmakers are planning to send letters to the Veterans Affairs Bureau (VA) advocating for the repeal of rules established during the Biden administration. Among those in support are Michael Cloud from Texas, Michael Cloud from New Jersey, James Lankford from Oklahoma, and Cindy Hyde Smith from Mississippi. They expressed their dissatisfaction with the VA’s proposed regulations regarding “reproductive health services.”

A letter obtained indicates that the Biden-era regulations permit abortions at VA facilities, which they argue violates federal law. The representatives believe that reverting to the previous standard, consistent with 38 CFR 17.38, is a fitting response to an administration that, they claim, deviates from the law established during Donald Trump’s presidency.

The initial rule expanded access to abortion services at VA facilities across the country. The lawmakers argue that this change contradicts existing state laws and raises ethical concerns about how abortion is framed in medical settings. They contend that the rules blur the lines between abortion and healthcare practices under the Department of Veterans Affairs (Champva) and promote “abortion on demand” at all stages of pregnancy.

Additionally, lawmakers have criticized training materials used by the VA, suggesting that they instruct healthcare workers to present abortion as the most favorable option for pregnant veterans and their families. This aspect raises another layer of concern about the ethical implications of such training practices.

The Family Research Council has also weighed in, submitting comments to the VA regarding the need to revert to pre-Biden standards. Lawmakers express that the way pregnancy options have been communicated in VA training is concerning, with allegations of dehumanization in how they present the language surrounding pregnancy.

They emphasize the need for the VA to provide quality care for pregnant veterans while safeguarding the rights of healthcare providers. Lawmakers argue that the ongoing rules overstep constitutional boundaries and lack proper legal backing. They show strong support for Doug Collins’ initiatives to exclude abortion services from the VA’s medical package.

In conclusion, lawmakers reaffirm their commitment to ensuring that high-quality healthcare remains the priority for American veterans, highlighting a respect for life in all forms. A spokesperson noted that 72 other lawmakers have endorsed the letter, supported by various pro-life organizations.

Since Roe v. Wade was overturned in September 2022, the VA has been offering abortion services under the current administration. This shift aimed to provide eligible individuals with access to abortion counseling, raising significant debate and contention among political groups.
