GOP Mayor Stands Firm on California Lawsuit Seeking Sanctuary City Compliance

California Mayor Responds to Lawsuit Over License Plate Data

The Republican mayor of a California city has criticized a lawsuit filed by the state’s Democratic Attorney General, stating that it serves as a means of coercion aimed at making his city align with liberal views.

The lawsuit, initiated by Attorney General Rob Bonta, claims that El Cajon has violated state regulations against sharing license plate information with federal or out-of-state law enforcement agencies. This legal action comes amid heightened tensions between California authorities and the Trump administration, particularly regarding immigration enforcement.

Mayor Bill Wells emphasized that his city prioritizes public safety and will not back down from this challenge. “Let’s be clear,” he remarked in a statement. “This is merely a political maneuver, aimed at punishing cities like ours for standing their ground.” He mentioned that Sacramento has long sought ways to penalize conservative areas.

Wells further asserted, “They have chosen politics over people and are now using the judicial system to intimidate those who disagree with them. We won’t apologize for protecting our residents.”

The core of the dispute involves SB 34, a 2015 California law that restricts local law enforcement from sharing certain data with federal agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol. State officials worry that such data, once shared, could end up in the hands of agencies that operate outside their jurisdiction.

California has enacted various laws intended to protect immigrant communities, including SB 54 in 2017 and a recent prohibition on ICE agents wearing identifiable face masks. License plate data has been highlighted as a valuable resource in tracking criminal activities related to undocumented individuals.

Bonta expressed that as the Trump administration intensifies its crackdown on immigration, it’s critical that state and local law enforcement agencies do not become instruments of his deportation agenda. He stated that El Cajon has repeatedly failed to comply with state regulations, jeopardizing community safety and privacy.

The conflict between California Democrats and the Trump administration escalated notably in June, following the federal government’s increased enforcement actions in the Los Angeles area. This situation led to significant unrest and prompted the administration to enlist the National Guard.

In the following months, the Trump administration filed lawsuits against California for alleged failures to comply with federal requests, including issues related to voter registration data. Governor Gavin Newsom, who is viewed as a potential candidate for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, has also taken legal action against the administration.

In contrast to the mayor of California’s largest sanctuary city, Wells insisted that sharing information with federal law enforcement is a strategy for ensuring public safety. “We won’t apologize for protecting our residents,” he reiterated. “Citizens in El Cajon expect their leaders to safeguard them rather than conform to the latest political whims from Sacramento. California’s priorities seem misaligned.”

“I refuse to be a part of that,” the mayor concluded.
