GOP operative drops sexual assault suit against CPAC’s Matt Schlapp

The Republican strategist who sued Conservative Political Action Conference Chairman Matt Schlapp and his wife Mercedes Schlapp for sexual assault and defamation has dropped his lawsuit against the couple, lawyers for both parties confirm to The Hill. Ta.

“I am discontinuing all litigation. The allegations in my lawsuit are the result of a complete misunderstanding, and I regret the pain this lawsuit has caused the Schlapp family,” Carlton Huffman said Tuesday. Schlapp said in a statement provided by a spokesperson.

Huffman, a former staffer for Republican Herschel Walker’s Georgia Senate campaign, accused Matt Schlapp of “aggressively fondling” his groin early last year while returning to a hotel from a restaurant during a campaign campaign. The couple was sued. October 2022.

The lawsuit sought $9.4 million from the couple for alleged sexual assault against Matt Schlapp, defamation of the couple and conspiracy to defame Huffman.

Matt Schlapp is also the chair of the American Conservative Union (ACU). Mercedes Schlapp is a former Trump administration official.

Asked to confirm Huffman’s statement, his attorney Timothy Hyland told The Hill, “The parties have resolved their differences.”

“The Schlaps have advised me that their statements about me are the result of a misunderstanding, which they regret. Neither the Schlaps nor the ACU paid me anything to dismiss my claims against them.” said Huffman.

Matt Schlapp and his attorney, Ben Chu, harshly criticized what Chu called “a particular agenda-driven media” that seeks to harm conservatives.

“In my 35 years of law practice, I have never seen a case of malicious accumulation by non-parties like the one suffered by Matt Schlapp and Mercedes Schlapp,” Chu told The Hill. stated in a statement. “We believe this is a challenge for everyone from non-party insiders with a scar on their shoulders to others unworthy of Schlapps’ trust, and, of course, to a particular agenda-driven group that seems all too intent on destroying conservatives.” I believe it ran the gamut from selective leaks from media outlets like “Schlaps.” ”

Matt Schlapp said his family was “attacked” by “left-wing media,” but it “came out stronger.”

“Increasingly, they [the left] They are strangling mainstream media, social media, and the legal system to silence, shame, and bankrupt Americans who hold opposing but correct views,” Schlapp said in a statement. “We have learned that from now on, we must fight with our eyes wide open, understand this fight better, and stand our ground. Mr. Huffman’s attorney also confirmed that his client was not prosecuted. defamation case to Republican activist Caroline Wren, who was accused of attacking Huffman on social media after the allegations against Schlapp were made public.
