Investigation Into Minnesota COVID-19 Fraud Scheme
The House Oversight Committee is looking into Governor Tim Walz’s involvement in what federal prosecutors are calling the largest COVID-19 fraud scheme in the country. Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth mentioned to Fox News Digital that this situation is likely just the “tip of the iceberg.”
In a Republican primary with multiple candidates aspiring to oust Walz, Demuth has made it a central campaign focus to root out fraud, which she claims has “exploded” during Walz’s time in office. In a recent interview, she stated that the governor must take “full responsibility” for the approximately $1 billion in fraud that has been revealed.
“This is likely just the beginning,” she said, asserting, “This falls squarely on his shoulders. He is the governor and must be held accountable.”
The controversy in Minnesota involves claims that a local nonprofit and its affiliates misappropriated hundreds of millions in COVID-19 relief funds from the federal child nutrition program. Walz’s Republican opponents are labeling this as a clear failure of oversight.
Demuth pointed out, “There was a lack of accountability and oversight that was essential,” noting that the governor was responsible for appointing the commissioners who should have been monitored more closely.
She also expressed concern regarding the state of oversight, suggesting, “If the proper monitoring was indeed happening and these issues arose under his watch, that raises even greater concerns.”
Federal prosecutors allege that nearly $300 million set aside to feed low-income children during the pandemic was misallocated through the Minnesota nonprofit, Feeding Our Future. As of late November, at least 78 individuals have been charged in what many consider the largest fraud operation related to pandemic relief in the U.S.
Interestingly, Demuth recalled that she had heard complaints about fraud in child care programs back in 2017 and 2018, even before she became a lawmaker.
She remarked, “This situation is escalating,” while reflecting on the governor’s role. “Considering who’s leading the state, it’s concerning that this situation has persisted for so long. It certainly doesn’t seem over yet; I believe there’s much more to uncover.”
House Oversight Chairman James Comer claimed Walz’s inaction allowed, among others, “Somali terrorists” to take nearly $1 billion from the program during a time when children were in need. He is spearheading the investigation into the “Feeding Our Future” scandal.
When asked about whether Walz is prioritizing political optics over accountability for the groups linked to the Somali community in Minnesota, Demuth remarked, “Fraud is unacceptable, regardless of who is behind it. It’s crucial for leaders to respond to investigations and address these issues without fearing backlash.”
In her view, it’s essential to confront issues of fraud head-on, as ignoring them for fear of public perception would be wrong for all Minnesotans. She promised that if elected governor, she would initiate an investigation, scrutinize all state agencies involved, hold individuals responsible, and establish procedures to prevent future occurrences.
Demuth aims to eradicate fraud and corruption in Minnesota’s government and demands accountability from officials tasked with overseeing programs that have been exploited. She stated her commitment to collaborate with Congress to establish a bipartisan Office of the Inspector General to detect fraud across all government levels.
While Walz’s office hasn’t provided comment on this issue, he did respond when asked during a recent “Meet the Press” segment if he would take responsibility for failing to curb the fraud. “I have a responsibility to enact justice,” Walz remarked, acknowledging that while Minnesota is of strong moral character, it also attracts criminals due to its prosperity. He added, “Reducing an entire community to the actions of a few is simplistic and unfair.”
Demuth countered his remarks, emphasizing that a truly “well-run and thriving” state should not attract criminal activity.
