GOP Rep Advocates for Arrests of Governors Violating Immigration Laws
In a recent statement, Texas Rep. Brandon Gill voiced his opinion that governors who disregard federal immigration laws should face arrest. “If they’re openly breaking federal law and obstructing federal law enforcement, that’s something we should probably consider,” he mentioned during a brief interview.
This conversation took place at a hearing concerning sanctuary states, involving governors from states like New York, Illinois, and Minnesota. As tensions in California rise, particularly around Los Angeles, Democratic leaders have accused the Trump administration of intensifying unrest, claiming that the president and his associates have downplayed federal immigration regulations—an assertion that California Governor Gavin Newsom disputes.
Drawing attention to California, Gill stated that if progressive governors were indeed violating laws, accountability is essential. “If they’re breaking the law and obstructing federal law enforcement for immigrants, then yes, arrest them,” he asserted. He also expressed concern over maintaining order in cities, saying, “I don’t think we should turn cities into disorderly hell. That’s what’s happening.”
A representative for Newsom responded to Gill’s comments by highlighting that California’s state laws differ significantly from federal legislation. They noted that this discrepancy isn’t new and emphasized the ongoing suspension of certain laws.
The clash over these issues isn’t unprecedented; back in 2019, federal courts ruled in favor of California’s sanctuary laws against challenges from the Trump administration. Now, however, there’s a new legal battle regarding the president’s authority to deploy the National Guard to Los Angeles, with a federal judge recently ruling that control should return to state officials, although this decision was quickly appealed.
Gill’s remarks were particularly aimed at Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, who has previously supported welcoming immigrants. Despite this, Illinois Democrats argued that he was referring specifically to asylum seekers. During the hearing, Gill questioned Pritzker’s stance on immigration enforcement, recalling that his administration had funded community initiatives while also opposing federal immigration agencies. “Does this reflect your moral values?” Gill asked, to which Pritzker clarified, “I do not support the abolition of ICE.”
