GOP rep wins primary to defend closely watched Arizona seat

Republican Rep. David Schweikert won party approval to retain one of the most vulnerable lawmakers. Arizona congressional seatDemocrats hope to overturn that in November.

The 1st District is currently held by Schweikert, who is up for reelection in 2022 by less than 1% and was the favorite to win in the primary.

Senate and House primaries are being held today in key Southwest battleground states

His main rivals were businessman Robert Bakke and former FBI agent and corporate investigator Kim George. Axios reported that Schweikert led both parties in fundraising, raising $2.5 million. The two leading Democratic candidates raised about $1.5 million each.

Schweikart has served in the House of Representatives for nearly 15 years, having been re-elected in many of the districts that have been redistricted since he was elected in 2010.

Candidates trying to unseat him in November include former state party chairman and 2010 candidate for state treasurer Andrei Cherny, former local news anchor Marlene Garan Woods, orthodontist Andrew Horn, former American Red Cross regional CEO Kurt Kroemer, investment banker Conor O’Callaghan, and former state representative Amish Shah. The results of this primary are unknown as of this writing.

Cook Political Report The report rates the race as close and gives it an R+2 rating, meaning Schweickert has a slim lead — but that’s before the Democratic nominee has been decided.

Arizona has been a hot topic this election season, with several House and Senate races and the presidential election all potentially decided by close margins.

Republicans hold slim majorities in the state Legislature, and Democrats are hoping to take both chambers, which would give them control of the House for the first time since 1966. Nationally, the fight for Republican victory is attracting the most attention. Senator Kyrsten SinemaThe Democrat-turned-Independent is not seeking a second six-year term in the Senate.
