GOP senators press Biden-Harris’ DOL over exaggerated job numbers revised down by 800,000

A group of Republican senators recently sent a letter to the Biden-Harris Administration's Department of Labor asking for an explanation for inflated job gains that were revised downward by more than 800,000.

The letter I received was New York PostThe bill was sponsored by Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kansas) and signed by Sens. Ted Budd of North Carolina, Rick Scott of Florida, Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee.

“It gave the public a false impression.”

The Biden-Harris administration came under fire last week after the Bureau of Labor Statistics released a preliminary annual benchmark review that revealed it had overstated job gains by 818,000, as previously reported by The Blaze News.

Most of the revisions were in the professional and business services sector, leisure and hospitality, retail trade and manufacturing, according to the report. The roughly 30% revision marks the biggest overestimate since 2009. Final figures won't be released until February 2025, after the November presidential election.

This significant miscalculation led Republican senators to question whether the original estimates were politically motivated.

“Using taxpayer money to deceive the American people for political gain is an outrageous betrayal of trust and one of the reasons Americans have completely lost confidence in this administration,” Marshall told the Post.

“At a time when people are struggling to buy gas and groceries, manipulating numbers to create a false narrative is not only dishonest, it's insulting,” he added.

“These misleading figures have created a false impression among the public and raised questions about the adequacy of the Department of Labor's accuracy and legitimacy,” the senators wrote in a letter to Labor Acting Secretary Julie Su.

“With the presidential election approaching in about 70 days, the state of the economy is one of the major issues. [Americans’] “There should be no confusion when assessing the health of our economy,” the letter said.

Senators requested more detailed information about the amendments, including how many jobs were added as COVID-19 shutdowns ended, how many were part-time and full-time positions, and how many government jobs were added.

The Department of Labor has until September 9 to respond to the senators' questions.

Former President Donald Trump (Republican) called the inflated jobs report a “major scandal.”

“The Harris-Biden Administration has been found to have rigged jobs statistics to hide the true extent of the economic devastation it has inflicted on America,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “New data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the Administration inflated the numbers by adding 818,000 jobs that do not exist and have never existed.”

He warned that millions of jobs could “disappear overnight” if Vice President Kamala Harris, a Democrat, is elected president in the next election.
